Gardeners Hornsey Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Hornsey is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety in all gardening activities we undertake across our service area.
We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and industry best practice. Our goal is to prevent accidents, injuries, ill health and damage to property by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures tailored to garden and landscape work.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Hornsey has overall responsibility for ensuring that health and safety standards are established, implemented and maintained throughout the business. Management will provide appropriate resources, information and supervision so that work can be carried out safely and without risk to health.
We will regularly review this policy and related procedures to ensure they remain suitable for the range of services we offer, including garden maintenance, planting, lawn care, hedge cutting, pruning, clearance and light landscaping tasks.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Gardeners Hornsey has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. All staff must follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly and cooperate fully with any measures introduced to protect people and the environment.
Employees must immediately report hazards, unsafe conditions, near misses, accidents or incidents of ill health to their supervisor so that prompt action can be taken to prevent recurrence.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments for our gardening tasks and work environments. These assessments consider hazards such as manual handling, slips and trips, working at height, use of machinery and tools, exposure to noise and vibration, contact with plants and soil, and interaction with members of the public.
Based on these assessments, we develop and implement safe systems of work. These may include site-specific instructions, selection of appropriate equipment, use of personal protective equipment, traffic management measures, and restrictions on certain activities in adverse weather or unsuitable conditions.
Before starting work on any site, our teams will familiarise themselves with local conditions, identify potential hazards, and agree practical controls to keep the working area safe and tidy throughout the job.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Hornsey ensures that all staff receive appropriate induction and ongoing training relevant to their role. This includes training in safe use of gardening tools and machinery, manual handling techniques, working at height where applicable, use of personal protective equipment, emergency procedures and incident reporting.
Where specialist skills are required, such as the use of powered equipment or certain pruning work, only trained and competent personnel will carry out these tasks. Work activities are supervised as necessary to ensure that safe practices are followed and that guidance is available whenever required.
Tools, Machinery and Personal Protective Equipment
We provide and maintain tools and machinery that are suitable for their intended tasks and kept in good working order. Equipment is regularly inspected, serviced as recommended by manufacturers and removed from use if found to be defective or unsafe.
Personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety footwear, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing and respiratory protection is provided where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Staff are required to use the protective equipment issued, keep it in good condition and report any loss or damage.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling loads such as soil, plants, tools and green waste. We aim to minimise manual handling risks through planning, use of mechanical aids where appropriate, and sensible limits on the weight and size of items to be moved by hand.
Employees receive guidance on safe lifting techniques and are encouraged to work at a steady pace, take appropriate breaks and raise any concerns about physical strain or discomfort. Tasks are organised to reduce repetitive movements, awkward postures and prolonged bending or kneeling.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Protection
If garden chemicals or other hazardous substances are used, we will ensure they are assessed, stored, transported and applied in accordance with safety data and legal requirements. Only trained personnel will handle such products, and all precautions needed to protect people, wildlife and watercourses will be followed.
We aim to minimise the use of chemicals where reasonably practicable, favouring safer alternatives and environmentally responsible methods of weed, pest and disease control. Green waste will be managed responsibly, with preference given to recycling and composting options available in the local area.
Working On Client Premises and Public Areas
When working in private gardens, shared spaces or public areas, we take special care to protect clients, neighbours, visitors and passers-by. This includes clear communication with clients, setting up warning signs where necessary, keeping work areas orderly and avoiding unnecessary obstruction of paths, driveways and entrances.
We will take reasonable steps to secure tools and machinery when unattended and to prevent unauthorised access to work equipment. Noise and disturbance will be kept to a minimum consistent with completing the work safely and efficiently.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported as soon as possible so that they can be recorded, investigated and used to improve our arrangements. First aid provision is maintained, and employees are informed of the procedures to follow in the event of injury, fire or other emergency situations that may arise during gardening operations.
Where required, incidents will be reported to the appropriate authorities. We will cooperate fully with any external investigations or inspections relating to health and safety matters.
Policy Review and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Hornsey is committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance. This policy and associated procedures are reviewed at regular intervals, and whenever there are significant changes to our work activities, client requirements or relevant legislation.
We actively encourage feedback from employees and clients about health and safety concerns and improvement opportunities. By working together, we aim to maintain a safe and healthy environment for everyone involved in or affected by our gardening services across the communities we serve.
